Jeremy Paxman to Try CBD in Battle with Parkinson Disease

British journalist and TV presenter Jeremy Paxman has opened up about his fight against debilitating disease Parkinson’s and how he intends to explore the potential benefits of CBD.

The Leeds born and Cambridge educated broadcaster was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 18 months ago and how its affecting his ability to work within TV and even type.

In a new ITV documentary Jeremy Paxman: Putting up With Parkinson’s, aired this week, the former Newsnight presenter said he was looking at the potential benefits of CBD in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease and said he was open to trying it.

Research into CBD's Potential Benefits for Parkinson’s Disease

There are many past and ongoing scientific researches into the benefits of CBD for Parkinson’s Disease.

It was stated in the TV documentary that a major study was being conducted by Kings College London about the impact CBD has on psychosis, which is a key symptom of Parkinson’s.

It says the research is looking at CBD’s potential ability to alleviate disturbing dreams and psychosis, as studies have shown that dreams of people with Parkinson's can include more aggressive content and more vivid and nightmarish, than those of people without the condition.

This causes many to have trouble sleeping due to REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), and in research published by published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics it was found that some patients with Parkinson’s disease who suffered from RBD had their symptoms alleviated after using CBD.

According to research Cannabidiol as a Promising Strategy to Treat and Prevent Movement Disorders? published by Frontiers in Pharmacology it’s claimed that CBD may help motor skills, and that its research was shown to help prevent abnormal movement, a typical condition of Parkinson’s. Although it does state that it was important to detect the condition early and start taking CBD as it may not be as effective if conditions are already prevalent.

In another study in Brazil, published by Sage Journalists it is claimed that CBD can improve the overall quality of life of those with Parkinson’s disease. According to the research, patients, who were treated with 75-300mg of CBD per day, reported a significant increase in quality of life.

What’s more, is that because CBD is a natural compound from the Cannabis sativa plant, using it may also leave you side effect-free, unlike many prescription medications.

Parkinson's Disease Symptoms

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects the dopamine-producing (dopaminergic) neurons in a specific area of the brain called the substantia nigra.

While genetics is thought to play a role in Parkinson's, in most cases the disease does not seem to run in families. Researchers now believe that Parkinson's results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, such as exposure to toxins.

Symptoms typically develop slowly over years, although this varies from person to person. People with the condition could experience tremors, slowness of movements, limb stiffness, balance problems, and other motor related problems.

People with Parkinson’s can also suffer from non-motor symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, apathy, hallucinations, constipation, orthostatic hypotension, sleep disorders, loss of sense of smell, and cognitive impairments.

It’s believed that people with Parkinson’s Disease patients usually begin developing Parkinson's symptoms around age 60. And along with a debilitating quality of life suffered by patients many live between 10 and 20 years after being diagnosed, which is typically shorter than healthy individuals.

CBD and its Benefits in The Fight Against Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is a life debilitating disease and affects the people and families of anyone who suffers from it.

Jeremy Paxman is the latest high-profile sufferer after other notable figures such as Billy Connolly, former US president George H.W. Bush, and most infamously boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

And while research into the benefits of CBD in the fight against Parkinson’s is inconclusive, and in its youth, there are many tests and anecdotal evidence that show it benefits patients in their fight against the disease.

The documentary about Jeremy Paxman’s fight against Parkinson’s Disease is the latest high profile airing of debilitating diseases and CBD’s potential. However, it’s not just in the fight against Parkinson’s that CBD’s benefits are being explored, so let’s hope the funding into CND’s potential benefits against many conditions continues to grow.
